Do you believe that Jesus is the good shepherd?

The good shepherd does not misuse or abuse or neglect or abandon his sheep. The good shepherd does not tend the flock for his own profit or benefit. The good shepherd does not flee from the wolf.

The good Shepherd lives and dies for their sheep. 

Do we believe Jesus is the good shepherd?

Or, do we somehow think that Jesus is not trustworthy? Do we somehow think that Jesus is going to, as the saying goes, “fleece us?” Do we think that Jesus is going to treat us kindly and generously, or do we think that he is going to rob us?

I wonder if we really believe that Jesus is the good shepherd.

La Iglesia nos ha llevado estas últimas tres semanas de la desesperación del Huerto y la Cruz a la alegría de la Resurrección. El domingo pasado nos presentó el don inconmensurable de la Divina Misericordia. A la luz de estas glorias, hoy nos invita a arrepentirnos.

Es extraño, ¿no? El mensaje de Adviento y Cuaresma es de preparación y arrepentimiento. Pero ahora, en el tercer domingo de Pascua, nuevamente se nos invita a arrepentirnos.

Third Sunday of Easter (B)

The Church has brought us these past three weeks from the despair of the Garden and the Cross to the joy of the Resurrection. Last Sunday, she presented to us the immeasurable gift of Divine Mercy. In the light of these glories, she invites us today to repent.

It is strange, isn’t it? The message of Advent and of Lent is of preparation and repentance. But now on the Third Sunday of Easter, we are again invited to repent.

4th Sunday of Lent (A – Scrutinies)

You may have noticed that we read the Year A selections the past two weeks. We will do so again next week. Bishop Coerver asked that all of the churches in the diocese join together to use these readings for the middle three Sundays of Lent. These three Sundays, we celebrate the Scrutinies.

During the Scrutinies, the Elect preparing for Baptism, are encouraged to examine their lives in order to uncover and heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect, and to strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The elect are encouraged to receive the spirit of Christ who is the living water (that’s last week’s gospel), the light of the world (that’s today’s gospel), and the life (we will hear about the resurrection of Lazarus next week). Through prayer and exorcism, the elect are freed from the effects of sin and the influence of the evil one so they are free to open their hearts to receive the gifts of our Savior.

Even where we do not have the elect in our parishes it is good for us to be united as one local church in our diocese, and to pray together for the elect everywhere. It is good, too, to scrutinize our own lives. Where are we weak and tempted? Where do we sin seriously? Where do we need to be freed, healed, or strengthened?
