You may think you know all about hypnosis from the movies. There’s a whole lot more going on. In this episode of Crash Course Psychology, Hank tells us about some of the many altered states of consciousness, including hypnosis. First lets define consciousness which is more than just being awake, in previous episodes hank defines consciousness as: our awareness of ourselves and our environment. Some altered states of consciousness are being awake, in a coma, hypnotized, and dreaming. Think of these altered states as different gears that your brain can shift into like the transmission in a car. Two things I like about this episode. One: every time i learn about the brain it makes me think of a quote from Einstein: ” The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.” Two: it’s entirely weird that my brain has seven plus gears that it can drop into and I become essentially not me anymore.
